One of the constant realities of life in Arizona is that during the summer the monthly energy bills skyrocket. There are many reasons for this but mostly it’s attributed to the additional resources needed to keep a home in Arizona cool during the hot summer months. There are a few things, however, you can do inside your home every month to reduce the internal temperature and the amount of energy needed to power your AC systems. Here are a few AC tips for summer that are sure to save you a pretty penny each month on your utility bills.
Tip #1 – Depend On Those Window Shades
Most homeowners in Arizona have two forms of window protection inside their homes: shades and blinds. Using blinds to keep direct sunlight from entering your home has been shown to reduce your indoor temperature up to 10 degrees in mid-summer. However, did you know that by adding a sunshade, such as a window treatment, drapes or even a window tint could further reduce your internal home temperature another 5-10 degrees? This is why we recommend you make sure every window in your home has some sort of window treatment that will reduce the amount of direct sunlight entering your home.
If you want to ensure your home doesn’t look like a dungeon, try opening your blinds to windows that are not directly in the sunlight then switching later in the day to the other windows.
Tip #2 – Replace Your Internal Filters Every Month
The second tip we’d recommend for keeping your home cool in summer is to replace those inside air filters that circulate the air to and from your AC unit. You might be asking yourself, “How does this help save money?” Well, the reality is that the AC system is a huge vacuum that depends on free circulation of air in order to operate with peak efficiency. When the air filters are clogged up with dirt and debris, it creates higher pressure and causes the AC system to work harder in order to circulate air through the home. By replacing the filters monthly, you can save up to 35% on your monthly energy bills – as opposed to leaving filthy filters inside your home. Plus, this will significantly improve the air you breathe daily.
Tip #3 – Have Your Thermostat Calibrated
Another simple thing you can do to keep your home’s internal temperature cooler while also saving money on utilities is to ensure your thermostat is calibrated before summer. Traditionally, the thermostat is the first thing that heating and air conditioning company in Phoenix go to when trying to diagnose a problem with the AC system. The reason for this is that it’s not uncommon for them to fall out of calibration or even be reset by accident. Some causes of thermostat failure include simple and common household issues including:
It’s estimated that an improperly set thermostat is the root cause of up to 40% of all summertime AC maintenance calls.
By simply following these three easy AC tips for summer, you’ll not only keep your home cooler, but you can save a ton of money on your monthly energy bills. And that’s just plain cool all around.
