HVAC Warranty Programs Explained

However, in the business world we live, reading the fine print is typically more confusing than helpful. This is why we’ve created this page; to simplify and articulate what is included in the limited warranties offered by some of the major HVAC brands that Hays Cooling and Heating services and installs.

Before we dig too deep into this, it’s important to first clarify a few important facts.

What is a Limited HVAC Manufacturer’s Warranty?

Limited HVAC Manufacturer’s Warranties are unique to the specific brand of heating or air conditioning system you purchase for your home or office.

There are conditions that must be met in order for the warranty to be activated including:

  • Proof of purchase at the time of service
  • The unit must be installed and warranty work must be performed by licensed dealer or contractor.
  • The unit must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and in compliance with local codes.
  • The units rating plate or originally installed location can’t be removed.

In general, a limited manufacturer’s warranty is provided by the company that manufacturers a heating or air conditioning unit. It is not a warranty offered or provided by the company that sells the product locally or installs the product.

It covers defective parts for a determine length of time, that also meet several criteria, but does not cover the costs of professional licensed HVAC contractors to replace those parts. In other words, the limited manufacture’s warranty will cover the parts but NOT the labor required to check or replace those parts.

This is where some confusion can occur.

What is Not Covered by a Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty?

As explained above, a Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty is “limited” on the parts that make up the system. 

However, there are a few items that this type of warranty does not cover such as:

  • Labor or other costs incurred for diagnosing, repairing, removing, installing, shipping, servicing or handling failed parts, replacement parts or new units.
  • Normal maintenance as outlined in the installation and servicing instructions or owner’s manual including coil cleaning, filter cleaning and/or replacement and lubrication.
  • Damage or repairs required as a consequence of improper shipping or handling, faulty installation, misapplication, abuse, improper servicing, unauthorized alterations and/or improper operation.
  • Failure to start due to voltage conditions, blown fuses, open circuit breakers or other damages due to the inadequacy or interruption of electrical service.
  • Failure or damage as a result of floods, winds, haboobs, fires, lightning, accidents, corrosive environments, rust, and wear or other conditions beyond the control of the product manufacturer.
  • Parts that are not supplied by the manufacturer.
  • Any special, indirect or consequential property or commercial property damage of any nature.
  • Costs of refrigerant
  • Any product purchased on the internet from a third-party source.

This final notation listed above in the general limited manufacturer’s warranty guidelines has become relevant with the growth and expansion of online e-commerce websites that sell HVAC equipment to consumers.

To be clear,

Labor costs associated with manufacturer limited warranty claims are not covered by the manufacturer or the contractor that provides these services. It is the financial responsibility of the customer to cover the costs associated with replacing warranty components.

Each Manufacturer Has Different Requirements and Restrictions on Limited Warranty Claims

As we noted above, it is imperative to understand that although many air conditioning and heating systems are similar, each one has individual restrictions that should be carefully reviewed by any potential customer prior to purchase. The differences are also unique to each manufacturer.
